Glossary
The trilogy uses a specific vocabulary that runs across all four books, the explainer pages, and the synthesis essay. This page collects the recurring terms in one place, each with a short definition and a link onward to wherever the term lives in the rest of the site. Not a dictionary — a working reference. Terms are grouped thematically; an alphabetical index sits at the foot of the page.

The core framework
The Field. The trilogy's name for the foundational ontological layer — that which is fundamental, of which matter, space, time, and individual minds are localized modes. Capitalized when the framework-specific sense is meant; lower-case "field" elsewhere. The Field is to consciousness what the electromagnetic field is to photons. See Synthesis §9.
Receiver model. The proposal that the brain does not produce consciousness but receives it — that conscious experience is the result of biological tissue coupling to a more fundamental field, with the body acting as a tuned antenna rather than a generator. The trilogy's central claim. Contrasted with the production model or productionism. See Synthesis, terminal lucidity, Levin.
Production model / productionism. The orthodox materialist position that consciousness is produced by neural activity — that the brain generates mind the way the liver generates bile. The position the receiver model responds to. See Crick & Koch's NCC program.
Antenna. The biological body considered as a tuned receiver for the Field. The metaphor is not loose: the body's architecture is built on phi-spiraled geometry (cochlea, DNA grooves, microtubules, fascia, phyllotaxis) which is exactly the geometry one would expect of a receiver whose job is to sample a continuous field at maximum coverage. Phi-tuned. Describing a biological structure (or, by extension, a person, a moment, a chord) whose proportions are organized around the golden ratio (φ ≈ 1.618). The trilogy's recurring image of the body as a φ-tuned antenna receiving the Field. See golden-ratio explainer.
φ-C (phi-tuned C). The specific frequency the trilogy circles around: 266.67 Hz, the C derived from φ-ratios rather than from standard equal-temperament A=440 tuning (which gives 261.63 Hz). The trilogy's claim is that the φ-C frequency is the resonant frequency the body is built to receive; Catherino's 72-tone work and Buckley's Hallelujah takes are the listening rooms in which the claim becomes audible. The cosmological architecture
Layer 0. The deepest layer in Limen's nested-reality cosmology — the unrendered, pre-spacetime substrate of which everything we experience is a rendering. The closest theological cognate is Eckhart's Gottheit, the Godhead-without-relation; the closest physics cognate is the pre-spatial structure that Arkani-Hamed's amplituhedron implies. Rendering. The trilogy's word for what happens when Layer 0 produces local, spatially-extended, observer-facing reality. Spacetime is a render. So are objects, and possibly individual minds. The metaphor borrows from computer graphics deliberately. See Planck scale, Bekenstein bound, amplituhedron.
Render economy. The trilogy's framing of why the universe behaves the way it does at the quantum level: because rendering everything in continuous detail would be computationally prohibitive, reality is rendered only when observed, only to the resolution required, with the unrendered parts held in superposition. The compression principle behind quantum measurement, Planck-scale quantization, and the Bekenstein bound. See Synthesis §6 & §8.
Field cosmology. The umbrella term for any cosmology in which consciousness or information is the foundational layer and matter is derivative. Compatible programs include D'Ariano & Faggin's information-theoretic framework, Maria Strømme's Φ-field formalization, and Donald Hoffman's interface theory. See Synthesis §9.
The chord
The chord. The trilogy's recurring image for what happens when the Field is received cleanly through a tuned biological substrate. Literal in Numen, where a specific augmented architecture of three frequencies is held in coherence by attention; metaphorical elsewhere. The chord that refuses to resolve is the formal musical structure of an entanglement that the field is still rendering. See Watch & Listen (Scriabin, Ligeti, Buckley).
The augmented architecture / augmented chord. A chord built of three notes a major third apart (e.g., C–E–G♯). It has no single root and refuses to resolve to a tonic. The trilogy uses it as the formal musical analogue of an entangled system that cannot be locally decomposed. See Lennon's (Just Like) Starting Over, Scriabin's Prometheus, the chord scenes in Numen.
Cymatic. Pertaining to cymatics — the study of how sustained tones at specific frequencies organize granular material on a vibrating plate into stable geometric patterns. The visible analogue of frequency-as-form. See Chladni / cymatics explainer.
Time, retrocausality, and the 300-ms gap
The 300-ms gap. The interval Libet measured between the onset of the readiness potential and the conscious decision to move — about 350 milliseconds in the original experiment. Used for decades as evidence against free will. The trilogy reframes it as the latency of the Field rendering local choice through biological tissue: not the absence of agency but the time it takes the receiver to bring the rendered choice into local representation. The pre-event window. The trilogy's symmetric counterpart to the 300-ms gap: a roughly 300-ms window before a sensory or environmental event in which a sufficiently sensitive receiver (Lucía Reyes in Anima; the cymatic patterns in Numen) registers the event coming. Empirically scaffolded by the two-state vector formalism and the delayed-choice experiments. See TSVF, Wheeler delayed-choice, Manning 2015.
Retrocausality. The technical claim, made rigorous by Aharonov & Vaidman's two-state vector formalism and demonstrated experimentally by Wheeler's delayed-choice, that the present is constrained by both the past and the future — not in a way that lets us send signals backward in time, but in a way that means "what is happening now" includes information from the measurement that has not yet occurred. The body
Biocybernetic. Describing systems that combine biological substrate with cybernetic information processing. The architecture of the Numen character Sable; also the architecture, more broadly, of any organism considered as a closed-loop information system rather than a chemical machine. The Cortical Labs CL1 is biocybernetic in the literal industrial sense. See biocomputing & the bio-cybernetic interface.
EZ water (exclusion-zone water). Gerald Pollack's proposed "fourth phase" of water — a charge-separated, semi-liquid-crystalline layer that forms at hydrophilic surfaces and extends hundreds of microns. If real at biological scales, it provides a candidate medium for the cellular-memory and microtubule-coherence claims the receiver model needs. See EZ water consolidated explainer.
Bioelectric blueprint. Michael Levin's term for the field of cell-membrane potentials that patterns biological form alongside (and sometimes ahead of) DNA. The trilogy treats the bioelectric blueprint as the cellular-scale instantiation of the receiver model. See Levin explainer.
Orch-OR. Penrose-Hameroff's Orchestrated Objective Reduction: the hypothesis that consciousness arises from quantum-coherent processes in microtubules. Long dismissed as biologically implausible; revived by Bandyopadhyay & Hameroff's 2022 demonstration of microtubule vibrational coherence at biologically relevant temperatures. Phenomenology and the contemplative
The gift structure. The phenomenological signature Marín García identifies in Teresa of Ávila's mystical writings: experience that arrives without being produced — characterized by surprise, novelty, suddenness, absoluteness, inter-personal origin, and the failure of language. The trilogy treats this structure as the first-person fingerprint of receiver-mode consciousness. See Teresa explainer.
Infused vs. acquired (after Teresa). Teresa's distinction between acquired prayer (the intellect producing its own attention) and infused prayer (something given to the intellect from elsewhere). The grammatical inversion is the point: in the second mode the soul is the recipient, not the source. See Teresa explainer.
The noise. Teresa's word for what the productive intellect does to a receiver that is trying to listen: "running about with the intellect looking for many words and reflections." The trilogy treats this as the contemplative-tradition name for what the Libet experiment measures as the readiness potential. See Teresa explainer.
Sākshī. Sanskrit for witness. The Advaita Vedānta term for the unchanging awareness that observes thought and sensation without being identified with them. Kiran Sākshī in Fragile Light is named for the concept. The contemplative cognate of the receiver model.
Anomalous evidence
Terminal lucidity. The clinical phenomenon in which patients with severe, longstanding cortical compromise (advanced dementia, late-stage psychiatric illness) unexpectedly regain coherent speech, orientation, and recognition in the hours or days before death. Documented across the medical literature for over a century, systematized by Nahm 2012, expanded to hundreds of cases by Batthyány 2023. See explainer.
Acquired savant syndrome. The emergence of savant-level capacities (mathematical, musical, artistic) in previously neurotypical individuals after brain injury, stroke, or frontotemporal dementia. The "capacity appearing after damage" phenomenon the production model has no place to put. See Treffert explainer.
The 40-bit paradox. Zimmermann's textbook estimate that the human nervous system processes roughly 10⁷ bits per second of sensory input while conscious awareness handles approximately 50. The five-to-six orders of magnitude of compression between input and experience that any consciousness theory has to explain. Sometimes called the user-illusion after Nørretranders' book.
Music and frequency
Spectral music. The compositional school founded by Grisey, Murail, and their colleagues at IRCAM in the 1970s. Treats the overtone series of a single sound as the primary compositional material, building works from spectral analysis rather than from melodic or harmonic abstraction. The musical translation of frequency is structure, not coordinate. See Watch & Listen.
Micropolyphony. Ligeti's term for the cluster-texture technique in Atmosphères and Lux Aeterna (used by Kubrick in 2001): dozens of independent slow voices layered so densely that no melody or harmony emerges, only a continuous field of sound with internal motion. See Watch & Listen.
Just intonation. Any tuning system in which intervals are tuned to the exact whole-number ratios of the harmonic series (2:1 octave, 3:2 fifth, 5:4 major third, etc.) rather than the equal-tempered approximations used in standard Western music. La Monte Young, Catherine Lamb, and the trilogy's φ-C frequencies all live in this territory.
Polychromatic music. Dolores Catherino's term for music with more than the 12 pitches-per-octave that equal temperament permits — her own work uses 31, 72, and 106 pitches per octave. The trilogy's closest contemporary listening room.
Quantum interpretation & physics anomalies
Wave function (ψ). The complex-valued mathematical object that encodes the quantum state of a system. For one particle, a function over three-dimensional space; for N particles, a function over 3N-dimensional configuration space. |ψ|² gives the probability density of measurement outcomes. The wave function does not "wave on" anything in the classical sense, and what it represents is the central interpretive question of quantum mechanics. See What Does the Wave Wave On?
Configuration space. The high-dimensional mathematical space the wave function actually lives on. For a system of N particles, configuration space has 3N dimensions. The interference pattern of the double-slit experiment appears on a 2D screen in 3D space, but the wave producing it lives in this much higher-dimensional space — which is the technical reason "what does it wave on" has no easy answer.
Pilot wave. The de Broglie (1927) — Bohm (1952) interpretation of quantum mechanics. Particles have definite positions at all times and are guided through space by a real physical wave that carries information about the entire experimental setup. Mathematically equivalent to standard quantum mechanics; ontologically much more transparent. The Couder–Fort oil-droplet experiments at Paris Diderot (2006) gave a classical fluid analog. Implicate order. David Bohm's term for the pre-spatial, pre-temporal substrate from which three-dimensional reality and ordinary matter unfold. Particles and waves alike are surface expressions ("explicate") of an underlying enfolded structure ("implicate"). The pilot wave is the visible signature of the implicate order. The closest physics-language cognate of what the trilogy calls the Field. Bohm, Wholeness and the Implicate Order (1980).
Many-Worlds. Hugh Everett's 1957 interpretation: the wave function never collapses; every quantum event branches the universe into all possible outcomes, each realized in its own parallel world. Parsimonious in postulates (no collapse axiom), extravagant in entities (uncountable branches). Raises a consciousness question — whether all parallel versions of you are equally conscious — that most defenders have not solved.
Objective collapse. The family of interpretations (Ghirardi-Rimini-Weber, Penrose's gravitational collapse, Diósi) in which the wave function is physically real and collapses spontaneously at some threshold (mass, gravitational self-energy, environmental complexity). The most experimentally testable alternative to Copenhagen; current experiments by the Bouwmeester and Aspelmeyer groups have not yet ruled the models out.
Holographic principle. 't Hooft–Maldacena: the maximum information that can exist inside a three-dimensional region of space is proportional to its surface area, not its volume. A sphere cannot contain more information than its surface allows. The interior is, in some fundamental sense, a projection of the boundary. Over 10,000 peer-reviewed citations. The architectural fingerprint of a universe with finite storage. See Simulation Hypothesis #10.
Bekenstein bound. Jacob Bekenstein, 1972: the hard mathematical limit on information density in any region of space, proportional to surface area. Confirmed thermodynamically by Hawking via black-hole entropy. Pack more data than the bound allows and physics itself forbids it — you get a black hole. The first quantitative statement of the holographic principle. See Simulation Hypothesis #10.
It from bit. John Archibald Wheeler's 1989 formulation: physical reality (it) emerges from binary information (bit). Every particle, every field, every spacetime structure derives, at bottom, from yes/no answers to yes/no questions. The philosophical floor under both the holographic principle and the simulation hypothesis: if information is the foundation, the universe is a computation.
Mathematical universe hypothesis. Max Tegmark's claim, published in Foundations of Physics (2008), that the universe is not described by mathematics — the universe is mathematics. There is no additional physical substrate beneath the equations; the equations are the reality. Wigner's "unreasonable effectiveness of mathematics" (1960) becomes obvious if the structures we use to describe reality just are reality. See Simulation Hypothesis #3.
Bostrom simulation argument. Nick Bostrom (2003): a formal trilemma. Either (1) civilizations almost always go extinct before reaching simulation capability, or (2) those that reach it almost always choose not to run ancestor simulations, or (3) we are almost certainly already inside one. The argument is mathematical, not philosophical; making the probability negligible requires explaining a universal pattern of extinction or restraint. See Simulation Hypothesis #4.
Wheeler's participatory universe. John Archibald Wheeler's mature position: no phenomenon is a real phenomenon until it is an observed phenomenon. The universe requires observers to bring itself into definite existence. Made operational by Wheeler's delayed-choice thought experiment (1978), confirmed in Paris (2007) and extended at the Australian National University (2019). Anthropic principle. The observation that the universe must have properties compatible with the existence of observers because we observe it. The weak form is a tautology used to explain why we find ourselves in a life-permitting universe; the strong form claims the universe is required to develop observers; the participatory form (Wheeler) makes the observers part of the universe's mechanism of self-actualization. Combined with the fine-tuning of twenty-six constants, it implies the constants were set to produce conscious observers. See Simulation Hypothesis #1.
Fine-structure constant (α). A dimensionless number, approximately 1/137, that governs the strength of the electromagnetic interaction between light and matter. Not derived from any deeper theory — measured, not predicted. Richard Feynman called it "a magic number that comes to us with no understanding by man." Move α by 4% and chemistry stops working. One of the twenty-six fundamental constants the universe sits on without explanation. See Simulation Hypothesis #2.
Penrose number. Roger Penrose's calculated probability of the universe's initial low-entropy state at the Big Bang occurring by random chance: 1 in 1010123. The exponent alone has more digits than there are atoms in the observable universe. Not a large number — the word large does not apply. A probability functionally indistinguishable from impossible.
Error-correcting codes (in physics). In 2015, Sylvester James Gates Jr. at the University of Maryland found doubly-even self-dual linear binary error-correcting block codes embedded in the equations of supersymmetric string theory — the same mathematical structure used by web browsers to detect and repair transmission errors. The codes were not inserted; they emerged from the mathematics. Gates has said publicly he cannot rule out the finding as evidence we live in a simulation. See Simulation Hypothesis #9.
Path integral / principle of least action. Richard Feynman (1942): a particle moving from A to B does not take one path; it simultaneously explores every possible path through spacetime, weighted toward the path of least action. The mathematical foundation of quantum field theory and the most precisely tested theory in science. In computer-science language, this is optimization — the universe at the quantum level performs the optimization procedure an engineer would build to minimize computational load. Mandela effect. The phenomenon by which large groups of people share identical false memories of cultural details — most famously, the false memory that Nelson Mandela died in prison in the 1980s. Conventional explanation: constructive memory and social reinforcement converge on shared errors. The trilogy treats the Mandela effect not as evidence the past was edited but as a clinical reminder that memory is reconstructive in ways that pressure our naive realism. See Glitches #3.
Bullet Cluster. The 2006 observation by Clowe and colleagues of two galaxy clusters colliding, in which the gravitational mass (mapped by gravitational lensing) is spatially separated from the visible matter (mapped by X-ray). The first direct visual evidence of dark matter — and the cleanest demonstration that whatever the universe is made of, it is not just the matter we can see. See Glitches #5.
CMB anomalies. Persistent statistical features in the cosmic microwave background that the standard cosmological model does not predict: the cold spot in Eridanus (~3σ colder than expected), the axis of evil (large-scale temperature fluctuations aligned with the ecliptic), hemispheric asymmetry, and the quadrupole-octopole alignment. Each could be a fluke individually; their persistence across two independent space-based instruments (WMAP, Planck) demands an explanation the standard model has not produced. See Glitches #8.
Black hole information paradox. Hawking's 1974 finding that black holes emit thermal radiation and slowly evaporate, combined with quantum mechanics' demand that information must be conserved, produces a contradiction: when a black hole evaporates entirely into thermal radiation, the information of what fell in has apparently been destroyed. Recent work on the holographic principle and the 2019 "island formula" suggests resolution paths; none is yet uncontested. See Glitches #9.
The Field. See also the entry at the top of this glossary. In the context of the new companion essays, the Field sits at the convergence of Bohm's implicate order, Tegmark's mathematical universe, and the receiver model: the substrate is informational, mathematical, possibly experiential at its base; particles and waves are patterns in it; the trilogy's framework treats this substrate as the same one different disciplines have been describing in their own vocabularies for centuries.
Vertical samsara. José Gude's own term — a refinement of the classical contemplative concept of samsara (the recurrence of pattern through successive lives). Where the received tradition leaves the trajectory implicit, vertical samsara names the wrinkle: the wave pattern does not merely recur — it reincarnates into progressively more evolved instances of itself, each iteration carrying forward what the previous one learned and shedding what it no longer needs. Information is not lost across lives; it is progressively edited toward a more complete version of itself. Each return is a draft. The framework parallels the holographic resolutions of the black-hole information paradox in physics: consciousness is conserved across a surface the standard instruments cannot read, with the edits providing direction to the encoding. The fictional case is Anima's Lucía Reyes — the seven-year-old born with a birthmark matching her father's fatal wound, carrying verifiable knowledge of his experiences. The empirical case is the corpus assembled by Ian Stevenson MD at the University of Virginia (continued today by Jim Tucker MD): over two thousand documented children with past-life memories whose details correspond to verified facts about deceased strangers. Quantized signature. The trilogy's term for the discrete, address-string-like identity through which a receiver couples to the Field. Even where the underlying pitch space, configuration space, or genetic space is an analog continuum, every physical receiver resolves into discrete permitted states. The principle generalizes across scales: the audible case is the augmented chord — E / G♯ / C at φ-ratios, three permitted frequencies out of the infinite pitch continuum; the biological case is DNA — a quaternary digital code (4 bits: A · T · C · G, not the binary 2 bits of computer hardware), in which each genome is a unique digital signature against which the Field can individually couple; the physical case is quantum spin and charge — strictly quantized at every level we can probe. Same architecture, three vocabularies, three reasons that continuous reality keeps resolving into discrete addressable states. See Simulation Hypothesis #6.
